There are some things that need to be considered before items are classified. Below are some general concepts to remember when classifying either living things or other items. Remember that in science it is possible that the methods of classification can be changed whenever new scientific knowlege becomes available.

  • Compare and contrast to find similarities and differences.
  • Organize the objects by common characteristics.
  • Further separate according to their physical attributes.
  • Label with terms that express the characteristics.

  1. Choose 8 items from your room and go through the steps above.
  2. Now compare your results with the results of others.
