What's Your Name ... Who's Your Mamma?

Once upon a time there was a truly ugly ducky. You remember the tale - he had a world of troubles. The other ducklings in his nest laughed at his big feet and long neck. The mother duck couldn't imagine how her offspring could be so "uglified." She was right. He wasn't a duck. He was a swan. It just took some time for him to look like one.

Some babies look very different from the parent organism. Their inherited traits don't show up until they mature.

See if you can determine the parent for these ugly ducklings! Drag your mouse over the box below each to check your answer.

beetle
dragonfly
frog
butterfly
oak tree

These organisms go through big changes in their lives or life cycles.

A life cycle is the series of stages or forms an organism goes through from birth to death.
