Use The Tools

 
In the last activity, you made observations and predicted the weather using the sensing tools you were born with --- eyes, ears, and touch. How did you do?
 
Of course meteorologists don’t predict the weather that way. They use the most modern tools they can find to make the most accurate predictions.
 
In this activity, you need the meteorologist’s tools you made in a previous section. They help to make more accurate predictions. Use your wind vane and barometer to predict the weather for a week. Keep in mind that real meteorologists use much more sophisticated tools, but this is a fun start
 

Try It!

MAKE PREDICTIONS:

  1. Make your observations each day using your senses.
  2. Record what you observe.
  3. Record the direction of the wind. You can use the following abbreviations: N, S, E, W.
  4. Observe your barometer. Remember if the water is steady or going up, the weather should remain calm. If it is falling the weather should change.
  5. Make your prediction.
  6. On the next day, indicate whether you were right or wrong.

ANALYSIS:

  • Which set of weather observations was most accurate?
  • Were you ever wrong?
  • Are meteorologists ever wrong?
  • What could you do to make the most accurate prediction possible?
 

Download the plug-ins: Get Adobe Acrobat Reader , and Get Quicktime Player. (The QuickTime plug-in is needed to play sounds and movies correctly.)
